Liposome Anti-Oxidant Complex is Thioctic Acid (Alpha Lipoic Acid) and Ubiquinone (CoQ10) in a Liposomal Delivery System (LDS).

Thioctic Acid (Alpha Lipoic Acid) is a powerful addition to skin care products where it functions as an important co-factor in the energy cycle, or enzymatic process, of all living cells. Thioctic Acid (Alpha Lipoic Acid) is well known as one of the most important factors in energy metabolism. When the tissues have sufficient Thioctic Acid (Alpha Lipoic Acid) it functions as a powerful biological anti-oxidant to protect the tissues from free radical damage. Considered the "perfect" anti-oxidant, Thioctic Acid (Alpha Lipoic Acid) recycles other important anti-oxidants such as Vitamin C and E and then increases Ubiquinone (CoQ10) levels. Thioctic Acid (Alpha Lipoic Acid) is hardly soluble and must penetrate the Corneocyte Layer to reach the target layers of skin. This is the purpose of the LDS.

Ubiquinone (CoQ10) is another powerhouse for skin care products where it functions as one of the most powerful anti-aging actives due to it's protection of the skin from lipid peroxidation. As we age natural levels of Ubiquinone (CoQ10) decline leaving the skin prone to free radical damage and the tell tale signs of aging skin. Sufficient Ubiquinone (CoQ10) levels are crucial to collagen production and elasticity. Ubiquinone (CoQ10) is well known to be one of the best natural anti-oxidants in the fight against the key signs of aging skin, especially dark spots and wrinkles. The LDS ensures delivery to target layers.

Liposomal Delivery Systems are microscopic vesicles that consist of an aqueous center with a phospholipid membrane. Phospholipids contain a glycerol bonded to two fatty acids and a phosphate group with a polar head. The fatty acid portion of this bio-molecule is hydrophobic and is located toward the outside of the lipid bi-layer whereas the phosphate group is hydrophilic and faces the aqueous interior. These phospholipid walls are identical to those that comprise other human cell membranes. Liposomes can differ in size, with a range in diameter between 150 - 3500nm, and they can be found in unilamellar and multilamellar forms. Unilamellar vesicles are small, exceptionally stable, molecules as they are formed via a high shear processing method. The Ingredients To Die For Liposomes are the Unilamellar structure and offer high stability for the incorporation into personal care products.

Liposomes are hydrated bilayer structures that are readily compatible with the peridermal lipids (the skin's primary moisture barrier) which exist as lamellar bilayers. Lamellar bilayers require less moisture to maintain their structure. When a Liposome fuses with the epidermal lipids, the epidermal lipid structure becomes overloaded with water and out of equilibrium. To restore equilibrium, the water and Phospholipid (+ the associated active) are rapidly churned throughout the top six cell layers of the stratum corneum, hydrating this structure. The extra moisture in the lipids remains for several hours, and greater penetration of the active occurs as it is rapidly carried down through the stratum corneum, with penetration stopping at the "end" of the living epidermal cells.
